On May 5, 2017, two Chinese geological parks, namely, Arxan National Geopark in Inner Mongolia and Koktokay National Geopark in Xinjiang, were approved to enter the UNESCO’s Global Geoparks Network (GGN), following the decisions adopted by the Executive Board of UNESCO at its 201st session held in Paris. The two parks, submitted for admission in 2015 by then China’s Ministry of Land and Resources and the National Commission of the People’s Republic of China for UNESCO, became the country’s 34th and 35th UNESCO geoparks. Meanwhile, the UNESCO Global Geoparks Council also approved the area extension requests of two other Chinese geoparks, namely, Zigong UNESCO Global Geopark and Leiqiong UNESCO Global Geopark. At present, the total number of UNESCO geoparks stands at 127, scattered in 35 countries and/or regions.
